A year ago, Cory Dragone and Harumi Kawai were running food carts in downtown Portland. Now the two are the head chef and sous chef, respectively, of Blacksmith Italian, a new restaurant that opened in November at 290 W. Kagy Blvd.
It was the result a multi-year search conducted by Dragone and his father, Stephen. The two Rochester, N.Y. natives were living and working on the West Coast at the time but had a hankering to own and operate their own restaurant. Attempts to secure a place in San Francisco Bar area, the Napa Valley, Portland and Rochester failed because of the various governmental restrictions on renovations and the fast pace of the real estate markets.
